For parents of children with apraxia who are embarking on their formal school journey, my advice is to prioritize communication and collaboration with educators and support staff. Establishing open lines of communication with teachers, speech therapists, and other professionals involved in your child’s education is crucial for ensuring they receive the support they need. Share information about your child’s apraxia, including their strengths, challenges, and any strategies that have been effective in supporting their communication. Additionally, advocate for your child’s needs within the school environment. This may involve requesting accommodations or modifications to support their communication skills, such as extra time for oral presentations or access to assistive technology. Be proactive in addressing any concerns or barriers that arise, and work collaboratively with school personnel to develop individualized plans that meet your child’s unique needs. Encourage your child to develop self-awareness and self-advocacy skills as they navigate their school years. Help them understand their apraxia and how it may impact their communication while emphasizing their strengths and abilities. Teach them strategies for effectively communicating their needs and seeking support when necessary. Finally, prioritize social-emotional support for your child. Help them build confidence and resilience by celebrating their successes and providing encouragement during challenging times. Foster a supportive home environment where they feel comfortable expressing themselves and discussing any concerns they may have about school. By taking a proactive and collaborative approach to supporting your child with apraxia during their school years, you can help set them up for success academically, socially, and emotionally.
