Despite the challenges that come with apraxia, it has also gifted me with a unique perspective and creativity. If I can’t find the right words, I find alternative ways to express myself, such as through creating videos or PowerPoint presentations. I learned early on that there is more than one way to communicate, and this knowledge has liberated me to be expressive and artistic. In school, I never hesitate to ask for help or extra resources, utilizing the available extended time and meeting with teachers outside of class to ensure my success. My academic perseverance has paid off with excellent grades, and I now aim to use my experience and passion to help others with disabilities. As a Sunday school Teaching Assistant, I am paired with children who require additional support, and I empathize with their struggles on a personal level. I know what it’s like to be labeled as “the kid with issues,” and want to help them find their voices and confidence. This drive has led me to pursue a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Syracuse University with the goal of becoming a Speech and Language Pathologist.
